GARDEN NEWS

Question of the Week – BUGS!

We’ve been swamped with a lot of questions about bugs lately and what to do with them in the garden. It is the season!

Our two articles for home-grown bug sprays (Home Garden Bug Solution and Squash Bugs and Ways to Deal With Them) are popular and work very well, but they don’t address a lot of other”buggy” questions.

Finally, we’ve found a book that we can recommend for the home gardener! It is excellent for the beginner, but also has really useful information for the more experienced gardener. We really like that it doesn’t just recommed reaching for the latest petro-chemical spray, but breaks control down into biological, cultural and acute methods.

FALL & WINTER GARDENS

TIME TO PLANT

Late August is traditionally the time to plant a second (or third) garden in areas where there is a hard freeze.

If you are in a milder climate with less of a winter, gardening during the cooler season is really rewarding with bumper crops of crispy, sweet carrots, beets, cabbage, kale and Swiss chard and many other cool season loving veggies.

It is heart-warming for us to see so many gardeners giving a cool season garden a try, with many commenting that it is much easier with less work, bugs and challenges than they had thought.

“How to Plan for Fall and Winter Gardening” shows you how to calculate when to plant your favorite veggies, and gives you some resources to jump-start ideas of what to grow this cool season.

Our Fall and Winter Gardening selection of seeds for some ideas that will spark your creative juices and dinner plans!
