Membership Drive, Monarch Flower Mix & Better Lettuce Germination

Membership Drive

During the month of July and August we are having a membership drive!

Why you ask?

One reason is we want you to be successful in your garden now and into the future.

What is our Membership Program?

It is a core group of members working alongside us and we want to include you! One of the great benefits is our members receive 20% off any order all year round. Plus, membership dollars help us support amazing programs such as this one…

GRuB – Garden Raised Bounty – Olympia, WA

Nonprofit program that works with local low-income families and youth to create positive locally based food solutions with tools and training. The Kitchen Garden Project builds home gardens for disadvantaged community members, and the 2 acre farm is used as an educational tool for local high school students, as well as a source of employment during the summer break. Produce grown on the farm is used by student’s families and the local county food bank. They raise funds for the program with a CSA through the summer and fall.

During July and August if you join our membership program you will receive our membership thank you package and an extra seed bonus you can plant for Fall.

We would love you to join us and become a part of our small family owned business on a whole new level. It is individuals like you purchasing seeds and supporting our membership program that allows us to continue to provide great content on gardening and encourage a new generation of gardeners.

Monarch Butterfly Flower Mix

The perfect time to plant flower seeds is approaching soon – fall and into early winter. Planting flower seeds in the fall mimics the natural systems of a flower head drying up and shattering – releasing its seeds to the soil. This gives time for the seeds to acclimate to their surroundings – moisture and temperature fluctuation – so that they are ready to germinate when the time is right next spring.

Our newest pollinator mix is for the Monarch butterflies, but in a unique way. It provides milkweed for the caterpillars to feed on, but goes a lot further than that. The adult Monarch butterflies use milkweed only to lay eggs on, needing other flower species for nectar to feed on. Our mix contains 13 varieties of flowers that are known to provide nectar for the Monarch and other butterflies over a wide range of climates and growing conditions.

This way, you are creating a much more complete Monarch butterfly garden with milkweed for the caterpillars and plenty of flowers that will feed the adults. This will attract more of the magnificent, endangered Monarchs to your garden and give them food along their long journey.

You will benefit by seeing more species of butterflies, especially Monarchs, having a more productive garden as more pollinators visit and  enjoying long months of beauty and wonderful scents as the flowers bloom.

Improve Lettuce Seed Germination

Even though it is high summer, we need to start thinking and talking about cooler season gardening. Before long, the weather will be right for planting those greens and veggies that love and thrive on the cooler weather. Don’t miss out on your “second season” in the garden this year!

Lettuce is a prime example – many new gardeners are surprised to see that lettuce bolts in the heat, because they’re used to seeing it in the supermarkets all year round. Others miss out on fall lettuce, simply because they forget to plant when it is still warm out.

We have some tips and techniques to share in getting a jump-start on your fall lettuce this season. We’ll show how you can get your lettuce seeds to germinate when the weather is still a bit too warm for the mature plants, so you’ll have more lettuce longer!
